There was a period of my life that I don’t think I understood until much later.
I wasn’t okay.
But I also wasn’t ready to change.
I knew I couldn’t continue the way I had been, but I didn’t yet know what healing would look like. So I stayed suspended somewhere in the middle.
Existing.
Functioning.
Surviving.
I think that’s one of the hardest places to be.
Because from the outside, life keeps moving.
You still go to work.
You still answer the phone.
You still make dinner.
You still show up for the people who need you.
And yet, internally, something feels off.
You know the version of yourself you’ve been carrying isn’t sustainable anymore.
But letting go of old coping mechanisms is terrifying, even when they no longer serve you.
There was comfort in the familiar, even if the familiar was hurting me.
At the time, I thought healing would look like waking up one morning and deciding to be different.
I know now that healing rarely works that way.
More often, it begins with awareness.
The quiet realization that the life you’ve built around survival is no longer the life you want to continue living.
I wasn’t ready to leap.
But I was beginning to question.
And maybe that’s where courage actually begins.
Not in certainty.
But in curiosity.
In asking:
What if life could feel different?
What if peace was possible?
What if I stopped abandoning myself just to make it through another day?
Looking back now, I have compassion for the version of me who lingered in that space longer than she thought she should have.
She wasn’t weak.
She was scared.
Because healing asks us to release the things that once protected us.
Even when those things eventually started hurting us.
If you’re finding yourself in that in-between place right now, please know this:
You don’t have to have all the answers.
You don’t have to know exactly what comes next.
Sometimes healing starts with a whisper.
A quiet knowing that there has to be more than merely surviving.
And maybe, just maybe, that’s enough for today.
❤️If you’re reading this…
If you’re functioning on the outside but quietly struggling on the inside…
If you’ve been surviving for so long that you can’t remember what peace feels like…
If you know something needs to change, but you’re not quite sure where to begin…
Please know this:
You don’t have to have everything figured out before you take the next step.
Healing doesn’t happen all at once. It often begins with a small shift—a moment of honesty, a conversation, a journal entry, asking for help, or simply admitting to yourself that you deserve more than just getting through the day.
Be gentle with yourself.
The space between surviving and healing can feel lonely, but you are not alone in it.
And if all you can do today is acknowledge that you want something different, let that be enough.
One quiet step at a time.
