The Things I Started Accepting

It’s strange looking back at the things I slowly started accepting.

Not because they felt right.

But because they became normal.

It didn’t happen overnight.

There wasn’t one moment where I suddenly became someone different.

It was smaller than that.

Quiet adjustments.
Tiny compromises.
Pieces of myself slowly becoming quieter.

I started paying attention to everything.

His moods.
His reactions.
The tone in his voice.

I became more careful with my words.
More careful with my emotions.
More careful with myself.

At the time, I didn’t recognize it as losing myself.

I thought I was just trying to keep the peace.

Looking back now, I can see how much space I stopped taking up.

I stopped saying certain things.
Stopped expressing certain feelings.
Stopped trusting my own reactions.

Not because someone directly told me to.

But because somewhere along the way, I started believing:
being “easy” was safer than being honest.

Whenever something hurt me, I found a reason for it.

Maybe he was stressed.
Maybe I was too emotional.
Maybe relationships were just harder than I expected.

I became really good at explaining away the things that quietly chipped away at me.

I used to think survival looked dramatic.

Now I know sometimes it looks like:

  • staying quiet
  • shrinking yourself
  • pretending things don’t hurt
  • convincing yourself you’re okay

Even when you’re slowly disappearing inside yourself.

I don’t blame the version of me who stayed.

She wanted love.
Connection.
Stability.

And more than anything, she wanted to believe things would get better.

The hardest part wasn’t what other people could see.

It was how disconnected I became from myself.

The quiet loss of confidence.
The second-guessing.
The feeling that my instincts no longer mattered.

Now I understand this:

The things we repeatedly tolerate
slowly become the things we believe we deserve.

And that realization changes everything.

❤️If you’re reading this…

If you’ve ever felt yourself becoming smaller just to keep someone else comfortable…

If you’ve ever silenced your own needs to avoid conflict…

You’re not weak for that.

Sometimes survival looks quiet.

And sometimes healing begins the moment you realize you deserve to take up space again.
