Somewhere along the way, I stopped recognizing myself.
Not all at once.
Not in a dramatic, obvious way.
It happened slowly—through small moments, quiet compromises, and the gradual exhaustion that comes from constantly trying to hold everything together.
I was tired all the time.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
Mentally.
The kind of tired that settles deep inside you when you spend too much time ignoring your own feelings just to make it through the day.
I didn’t realize then that I was living in survival mode.
I just thought this was what adulthood felt like.
I used to be expressive.
Opinionated.
Emotional.
Open.
But somewhere along the way, I became quieter.
I stopped sharing certain thoughts.
Stopped explaining how I felt.
Stopped believing my emotions mattered enough to take up space.
It felt easier that way.
Safer.
From the outside, life probably looked normal.
Maybe even fine.
But internally, I felt disconnected from myself in a way I didn’t know how to explain.
I kept trying harder.
Trying to fix things.
Trying to be more understanding.
More patient.
Tried to be enough.
As if loving someone correctly could somehow save both of us.
I think one of the hardest parts was how lonely it felt.
Not because people weren’t around me.
But because I no longer felt connected to myself.
And when you lose that connection long enough, you start forgetting:
- what you need
- what you feel
- who you are underneath all the surviving
Somewhere during all of this, I also started learning how to numb myself.
Not intentionally at first.
Just little ways of escaping:
- distracting myself
- avoiding my thoughts
- trying not to feel everything so deeply
- maybe having one too many drinks
Anything that could quiet the heaviness for a little while.
At the time, I didn’t recognize it as coping.
I thought I was just trying to make it through.
Looking back, I don’t see weakness in that version of me.
I see someone emotionally exhausted.
Someone trying to survive situations she didn’t fully understand yet.
Someone who desperately needed peace but didn’t know where to find it.
You can lose yourself long before anyone else notices.
Long before things look broken from the outside.
And sometimes the scariest part isn’t the chaos around you—
It’s realizing how disconnected you’ve become from yourself within it.
❤️If you’re reading this…
If you’ve been feeling emotionally exhausted…
numb…
or disconnected from yourself lately…
Please know this:
You are not failing.
Sometimes the mind and body learn to survive long before we learn how to heal.
And healing begins with noticing what your soul has been trying to say all along.
