I Didn’t Know What I Needed Anymore

Somewhere along the way, I stopped checking in with myself.

I knew what everyone else needed.

I knew how to anticipate moods, solve problems, and keep things moving.

I knew how to be dependable.

I knew how to be strong.

What I didn’t know anymore was this:

What did I need?

The question felt unfamiliar.

For years, I had become so focused on taking care of everyone around me that I stopped noticing the quiet signals from within.

Exhaustion.

Resentment.

Loneliness.

A longing for something I couldn’t quite name.

I had learned to override my own needs so many times that eventually, I stopped hearing them altogether.

I told myself that this was what adulthood looked like.

That everyone was tired.

That everyone put themselves last.

That eventually, there would be time for me.

But eventually is a dangerous word.

Because eventually has a way of turning into never.

I don’t think I realized how disconnected I had become until people started asking simple questions.

“What do you want?”

“What would make you happy?”

“What do you enjoy doing?”

I didn’t know how to answer.

Not because I didn’t have dreams.

But because I had spent so many years adapting to everyone else’s expectations that I no longer recognized my own voice.

Looking back now, I understand that losing yourself doesn’t always happen through one major event.

Sometimes it happens through small acts of self-abandonment repeated over and over again.

Choosing everyone else.

Ignoring your instincts.

Minimizing your own pain.

Believing your needs can wait.

Until one day, you’re standing in the middle of your own life wondering how you became a stranger to yourself.

I wish I could say I had all the answers then.

I didn’t.

But I had started asking better questions.

And sometimes, that’s where healing begins.

Not in knowing exactly what comes next.

But in being willing to wonder if you deserve something different.

❤️if you’re reading this…

If you’ve become so good at caring for everyone else that you’ve forgotten how to care for yourself…

If someone asked you what you needed and you genuinely wouldn’t know how to answer…

If you’ve been putting your dreams, your rest, and your happiness on hold waiting for “someday”…

Please know this:

You matter too.

Your needs are not selfish.

Your voice deserves to be heard.

And it is never too late to begin getting to know yourself again.

Start small.

Ask yourself what brings you peace.

What brings you joy.

What makes you feel most like you.

Because becoming yourself again doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens one gentle choice at a time. 🤍
