When Chaos Feels Like Home

—

You would think that after living through chaos, peace would feel wonderful.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Sometimes peace feels strange.

Too quiet.

Almost suspicious.

When you’ve spent enough time anticipating the next problem, your mind doesn’t necessarily stop looking for one just because life has become calmer.

I didn’t understand that about myself yet.

I could walk into a room and read it almost instantly.

Who was upset?

Who wasn’t speaking?

Had someone’s mood changed?

Was something wrong?

I noticed everything.

For a long time, I thought that was simply part of my personality.

I was observant.

Intuitive.

Good at reading people.

And maybe I was.

But there was another layer underneath it.

I had learned to pay attention because paying attention once mattered.

When you’ve lived through unpredictability, knowing what’s happening around you can feel like safety.

So even when my life began changing, part of me remained on watch.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Reading the room.

Sometimes even creating worry where there wasn’t any because calm felt unfamiliar.

That’s one of the strangest things I’ve learned looking back:

You can leave chaos long before chaos leaves you.

I wasn’t choosing dysfunction.

I wasn’t consciously looking for problems.

My nervous system simply understood familiar better than it understood peaceful.

And familiar—even when it isn’t healthy—can feel strangely comfortable.

It would take a long time before I stopped confusing hyper-awareness with intuition.

Before silence stopped feeling like something bad was about to happen.

Before I understood that peace wasn’t the pause between disasters.

Peace could simply be peace.

I’m still learning that one.

If you’re reading this…

And calm sometimes makes you uncomfortable, there may be nothing wrong with you.

Maybe you’ve simply spent so much time surviving storms that you’re still learning what it feels like when the weather stays beautiful.

Give yourself time.

You don’t have to keep looking for the storm.

Love,
Nova Leigh
